What you need before you start
- Exact device, model and condition
- Truthful invoice or reasonable used value
- Battery type, rating and configuration
- Receiver identity and contact details
- HS code and country of origin
- Carrier acceptance in writing
What Indian Customs checks
Use a specific description such as “used Apple iPhone 15, 256 GB” rather than “electronics”. Customs may review the product classification, transaction or replacement value, freight and insurance, country of origin and reason for import.
Do not lower the declared value to reduce duty. Customs can reassess it and ask the receiver for an invoice, receipt or payment evidence.
Checks by device type
Phones, tablets, laptops and cameras normally contain lithium batteries. Tell the carrier whether the battery is installed, packed with the equipment or separate. Damaged, swollen, defective or recalled batteries should not be offered for transport.
- Phone or tablet: model, condition, value and battery installed
- Laptop: model, serial number, charger and battery condition
- Camera: itemised body, lenses and batteries
- Drone: carrier acceptance plus any Indian aviation, wireless or import requirements
- Power bank or spare battery: check separately because acceptance is more restrictive
Documents the receiver may need
An individual receiver may be asked for identity/KYC documents and proof of value. A commercial importer will normally need an Importer Exporter Code and business documentation. Requirements depend on the goods and clearance route, so confirm them before the parcel leaves Dubai.
How to estimate duty without guessing
Identify the exact device, then check its HS code and current treatment in ICEGATE’s Trade Guide on Imports. Use the real country of origin and ask the carrier or broker which entry route applies. The final assessment remains with Indian Customs.
India–UAE CEPA treatment is not automatic. Goods bought or re-exported through Dubai do not become UAE-origin. Preference requires the applicable origin rules and valid proof of origin.
