Shipping from Dubai to the Netherlands means your goods enter the EU customs union, so Dutch Customs (Douane) assess them on arrival, often through Rotterdam or Schiphol. Customs duty is only charged once the goods value passes €150. Under that, most parcels clear duty-free, and above it the rate depends on the commodity code of your goods. For common items like clothing, gifts and personal effects, duty rates are usually low.
Import VAT is the cost most senders overlook. Since the EU ended the low-value VAT exemption in July 2021, there is no VAT-free threshold, so Dutch import VAT at 21% (indicative for 2026) applies to almost every parcel, including small ones. The €150 line concerns duty, not VAT. VAT is charged on goods value plus shipping and any duty, and the receiver in the Netherlands normally pays it before delivery, unless it is pre-paid at booking.
For personal parcels you usually just need a clear invoice showing contents and value. Commercial shipments require a Dutch EORI number and correct HS codes. Air express suits most Dubai to Netherlands shipments and, thanks to strong Dutch logistics, transit is quick. A parcel collected in Dubai typically reaches Amsterdam, Rotterdam or The Hague in 2–3 days, customs cleared and delivered to the door. It is ideal for documents, samples, gifts, electronics and loads up to roughly 50–70 kg.
Sea freight is the better call for bulk, furniture or a full relocation. It is much cheaper per kilo but slower, usually three to five weeks port to port into Rotterdam plus onward delivery to your Dutch address. For a few boxes, air almost always wins once handling and speed are weighed up.
