How dangerous goods work by air

"Dangerous goods" (also called hazmat or DG) are items that can pose a risk in transport β€” flammable liquids, batteries, aerosols, corrosives and more. Air transport of dangerous goods is governed by the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, and each item is assigned a UN number and class that decides how β€” or whether β€” it can fly.

A common example is perfume: because it is alcohol-based, it is classified as a flammable liquid and is usually shipped as a limited quantity with the correct packing and marking. Lithium batteries have their own strict rules, and a small number of items are forbidden by air altogether.

What we do β€” and what we won't

Tell us exactly what the item is (and its UN number or safety data sheet if you have one) and we will advise on how it is classified, what packaging and labelling it needs, and the compliant service to move it. We prepare the dangerous-goods declaration and coordinate the shipment.

Where an item cannot legally or safely go by air, we will say so plainly rather than risk your shipment being seized, fined or worse. Honest classification up front is the whole point β€” it protects your goods, the aircraft and your business.

What to send us for a DG quote

  • A precise description of the item (brand/product name)
  • Its UN number and class, or a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) if you have one
  • The quantity and packaging
  • The destination country and city

Frequently asked questions

Can I ship perfume from Dubai?
Usually yes. Perfume is alcohol-based, so it counts as a flammable liquid (a dangerous good) and is normally shipped as a limited quantity with correct packing, marking and declaration. Tell us the quantity and destination and we will confirm the compliant way to send it.
Can I ship lithium batteries or devices with batteries?
Often yes, but lithium batteries have strict air rules that depend on the battery type, whether it is loose or installed in a device, and the quantity. Some configurations are restricted or forbidden by air. Tell us exactly what it is and we will advise.
What dangerous goods cannot be shipped by air?
A number of items are forbidden by air under the IATA rules, and others are heavily restricted. Rather than guess, send us the item and any Safety Data Sheet and we will tell you honestly whether it can fly and how.
Do you prepare the dangerous-goods declaration?
Yes. Where an item can be shipped, we handle the classification, compliant packing and labelling, and the dangerous-goods declaration required for air transport.
What is an SDS and do I need one?
A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) describes a product's hazards and composition. For chemicals and many industrial items it is the fastest way for us to classify the goods correctly, so please send it if you have one.
